Known as Haethfeld in 970, when King Edgar gave 5,000 acres to the monastery of Ely, Hatfield was once a centre for British Aerospace manufacturing between the 1930's and 1990's, it is also home to the University of Hertfordshire. Hatfield is mentioned in the Domesday Book as being the property of the Abbey of Ely, we know this with great accuracy because the original document containing the census data of the area (eventually compiled into the Domesday Book) still survives.
